Through the eyes of Christ

What if we saw people the way God sees them? What if we saw ourselves the way God sees us? What would happen if we viewed the world through the eyes of Christ????????

My sweet Lily is completely blind. All she knows of the world around her is what we tell her and what she discovers through touch and sound and smell. What she knows about the Spirit remains a mystery but I whole heartedly believe she knows a great deal more than I ever will on this side of eternity. I have often considered the beautiful gift her love is. It is not based on how one looks, or on one’s past, or even one’s sin. She is not swayed by an individuals position is this life be it humble or powerful or anywhere in between. Her love is truly without condition. I imagine the way she loves is a representation of Christ’s love for us.

I have a brother named Toney, Lily’s uncle. Upon first look, Toney was quite an intimidating figure. At well over 6 feet tall, with arms twice the size of an averages man’s head, able to bench 505lbs, covered in ink, with the look of a man who fought alongside William Wallace in Braveheart, Toney struck fear in just about everyone who crossed his path. He was fierce. He had to be. Toney’s childhood was the stuff of nightmares. What he lived through is difficult to conceive at best. He spent his first time in juvenile detention while still in grade school and continued to be in and out of prison throughout the duration of his life. He was a fighter. He was a survivor. Toney never saw himself as anything more than the world told him he was. A criminal. A monster. Unworthy….

Lily was born just weeks after Toney got out of prison after serving 7 years. Being blind, Lily spent the majority of her first year fearful and withdrawn. Her muscle tone was so high she rarely reached out beyond an inch or two from her body. She cried a lot and was distrusting of most. Toney loved Lily with a beautiful tenderness. Every opportunity he had he would hold her. Every time he did something amazing would happen. While resting in the arms of this giant, she would be at total peace. She would reach up and stroke his beard until she drifted off to sleep. He would cradle her and gently walk around for hours at a time. You see, Lily didn’t care what those powerful arms had done in the past, she only knew she rested securely in his strong embrace. It didn’t matter to Lily who he had been or what he had done before he knew her, she only felt his love for her. I know Lily saw what most could not see, Toney’s true person. She saw in him what he was unable to see in himself. His goodness. His gentleness. His worth. His ability to love and be loved….

Many times Toney told me that he had gone too far, he had done too many terrible things to ever be loved and forgiven by God. That belief was reiterated to him time and time again by a world that could not see beyond his sin, his past and his outward appearance. And I wonder, what if???? What if Toney could have been seen through the eyes of Christ? Could he finally have fathomed the infinite love of God? Could he have understood his sonship as an heir to the throne? Could he have grasped the never ending mercy of his heavenly Father? I wholeheartedly believe in the last moments of his life, when he asked for prayer, he understood. And I believe he is waiting for us in heaven. The great sadness that I carry for Toney is that this realization only came at his tragic end. I wish that he could have experienced God’s love, His healing, His redeeming power and His endless grace; and gone on to live a life filled with peace.

In writing this post my hope is that we each would ask God to see people as He sees them. To love them as they are, where they are and trust God for the rest. We need not concern ourselves with turning sinners into saints. But merely offer them unconditional love and in doing so, give them Jesus. There is nothing but the blood of Jesus.

What can wash away my sins? What can make whole again? Nothing but the blood of Jesus.

For my pardon this I see. For my cleansing this I plea. Nothing but the blood of Jesus. Nothing can for sin atone. Naught of good that I have done. Nothing but the blood of Jesus.

This is all my hope and peace. This is all my righteousness. Nothing but the blood of Jesus. Now by this I’ll overcome. Now by this I’ll find my home. Nothing but the blood of Jesus.

Oh precious is the flow that makes me white as snow. No other fount I know, nothing but the blood of Jesus.

Glory Glory this I sing. Nothing but the blood of Jesus. All my praise for this I bring.  NOTHING BUT THE BLOOD OF JESUS.

All my love,

  1. I remember Toney well. He was always kind hearted when I saw him. Very sad that the enemy can get to us in these ways sometimes. Make us believe that a God has abandoned us. That is a lie. The great lie.
Psalm 94:14 For the Lord will not forsake his people; he will not abandon his heritage
